If you enjoy personality quizzes, you’ll love the MCode assessment.

MCode, short for Motivation Code, is designed to help you better understand what motivates you and how you relate to others. Whether you’re a Driver, Influencer, Orchestrator or Visionary, your results can provide valuable insight into your strengths, preferences and communication style. As you start university, this is a fun way to reflect on how you show up in group projects, friendships, and campus life. You might even learn something new about yourself—and pick up strategies for building stronger connections along the way.

All UCalgary students can complete a free basic MCode assessment at edu.motivationcode.com/ucalgary.

To get the most meaningful results from your assessment, here are some tips to keep in mind before and after completing your assessment.

1. Choose meaningful stories

Your results are only as accurate as the experiences you choose to reflect on.

When selecting stories, think about moments when:

  • YOU felt deeply satisfied (even if no one else noticed)
  • the activity itself was meaningful to you
  • you found satisfaction in the experience, not just the outcome
  • what you were doing mattered because it was important to you

Try not to choose stories simply because they sound impressive. Instead, focus on experiences that you genuinely enjoyed or found rewarding.

2. Use the full rating scale

As you answer the assessment questions, take time to think about how strongly each statement reflects your experience. Remember to:

  • use the full range of the scale rather than selecting only the extreme lowest or highest ratings
  • distinguish between what felt “somewhat satisfying” and “extremely satisfying”
  • answer honestly, even when your response falls somewhere in the middle

The more nuanced your responses are, the more accurate and personalized your results will be. The assessment can only map your motivations if you show the full range of what drives you.

3. Highlight what resonates

Once you’ve received your report, spend a few minutes reviewing it carefully.

As you read, consider:

  • which insights immediately resonate with you (e.g. “that is so me”)
  • what from the report surprised you or doesn’t quite fit
  • whether there are any patterns you’d like to explore further

Your MCode report is a starting point for self-discovery. Use it to better understand yourself, recognize your strengths and consider how you can apply those insights throughout your university experience.
