Department of Cardiac Sciences leadership update

Restructuring set to begin in August

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) are announcing leadership restructuring within the Department of Cardiac Sciences, effective Aug. 1, 2022.

Dr. Paul Fedak, MD, PhD, is currently the joint department head and director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. To maximize the opportunities within the department and institute, Paul will depart the role of clinical department head on July 31, 2022. He will remain as the academic department head until July 31, 2023, as well as director of the Libin Institute.

After July 31, 2023 Paul will focus his leadership expertise as the Libin director for a five year renewable term. A search will begin immediately for an interim clinical department head of Cardiac Sciences for the period Aug. 1, 2022 until July 31, 2023.

A search will be initiated in the fall for a joint department head of Cardiac Sciences, with a goal of having this individual in place by August 2023. The new department head will work collaboratively with Paul in his role as director of the Libin Institute. It is felt that this extra bandwidth will allow even greater growth for the department and Institute.

We thank Paul for his extraordinary execution of all three leadership roles over the past three years and are grateful that this change will result in his ongoing guidance of the academic mission of the cardiac sciences domain.
