UCalgary, Quantum City, PASQAL partner to advance quantum ecosystem

In a bold move toward building Alberta's quantum landscape, the University of Calgary has entered a partnership with PASQAL, a global leader in neutral atoms quantum computing. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of quantum innovation, exemplifying UCalgary's commitment to fostering technological advancement within the province.

At the heart of this partnership lies a multifaceted approach to fostering comprehensive growth in Alberta's quantum landscape. Together, Quantum City, the University of Calgary’s new quantum innovation hub, and PASQAL are poised to establish an experimental data centre, providing a robust platform for cutting-edge research and development initiatives and promoting bilateral exchanges between France, Quebec, and Alberta's quantum ecosystems. 

Additionally, a suite of educational programs, workshops, and industry exposure opportunities will be curated to equip students and researchers with the skills and insights necessary to thrive in the next quantum era. 

Rob Thompson, associate vice-president (research) and executive director, Research Services at the University of Calgary, emphasizes the importance of the partnership. “This collaboration highlights UCalgary’s dedication to cultivating a vibrant quantum ecosystem in Alberta.” He elaborated on the university's vision, highlighting three pillars foundational at Quantum City: talent generation, quantum commercialization, and quantum infrastructure.

“This partnership is instrumental in advancing each of these pillars,” explains Dr. Thompson, PhD. "By working together, we’re not only nurturing the next generation of quantum talent but also accelerating the commercialization and applications of quantum technologies while ensuring the development of sustainable quantum infrastructure.” 

PASQAL’s contributions include funding research programs and aiding faculty recruitment, leveraging its global network to attract top-tier quantum talent, thus maintaining Alberta’s leadership in quantum innovation. Meanwhile, the University of Calgary will provide access to its planned Quantum City qHub and qLab facilities, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and quantum technology commercialization.
