Finding Our Way
Whether we're checking directions on our phone, hailing a rideshare or watching an aircraft land safely through poor weather, most of us rarely stop to think about the technology quietly calculating exactly where we are. Behind that every-day convenience are decades of scientific discovery that have transformed how people navigate the world, monitor critical infrastructure, grow crops and build the next generation of autonomous technologies. Few Canadians have contributed more to that evolution than Dr. Yang Gao, PhD'93.
An internationally recognized leader in satellite navigation and geospatial science, Gao has spent more than three decades advancing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), helping improve the accuracy, reliability and resilience of positioning technologies used around the world. His research has resulted in more than 350 publications, numerous patents and recognition as one of the world's most highly cited scientists, while his work has helped establish the University of Calgary as one of the world's leading centres for geomatics engineering. For those contributions and for the generations of students and researchers he has mentored, Gao is receiving University of Calgary Alumni’s International Career Achievement Award.
Despite a career that has placed him among the world's leading experts in satellite navigation, Gao describes his work in remarkably simple terms.
“Geomatics engineering is the science and technology of understanding our world through location and time,” he says. “We measure, map and understand our world. We provide positioning, navigation and timing — the foundation for so many technologies people rely on every day.”
While many people still associate geomatics engineering with traditional land surveying, today's field reaches far beyond measuring property boundaries. Modern geomatics engineers work at the intersection of satellites, software, sensors and data, developing technologies that quietly support everything from emergency response and aviation to autonomous vehicles, precision agriculture and infrastructure monitoring. It is work that often goes unnoticed precisely because it works so well.
That quiet reliability is no accident. It is the product of decades of research aimed at answering a deceptively simple question: How do we know exactly where we are? For most people, being accurate within a few metres is more than enough to find a restaurant or navigate across town. For engineers, however, those few metres can be the difference between success and failure.
“My research focuses on improving positioning accuracy from metres to just a few centimetres,” says Gao. “If you want to launch a rocket, you need to know exactly where you are and exactly where the target is.”
Those centimetres have opened the door to technologies that were once unimaginable. More-accurate positioning allows engineers to detect tiny shifts in bridges and buildings before they become dangerous, helps farmers use resources more efficiently and enables autonomous vehicles to operate more safely. Every improvement in precision creates opportunities for new applications, many of which become so seamlessly integrated into everyday life that people rarely think about the science working behind the scenes.
That pursuit of precision has guided Gao since arriving at UCalgary as a doctoral student. When he chose Calgary to pursue his PhD, satellite navigation was still an emerging discipline, but the university had already earned an international reputation in geomatics engineering.
“It was an exciting time because satellite navigation was just beginning to emerge,” he recalls. “I didn't know exactly where my career would lead, but I knew I was entering a field with tremendous potential.”
Few could have predicted just how dramatically that field would evolve. Over the course of Gao's career, satellite navigation has transformed from a specialized engineering tool into technology embedded in billions of devices around the world. What was once primarily used by surveyors and researchers now supports smartphones, aircraft, construction equipment, emergency services and countless other applications people rely on every day. Gao has not simply witnessed that transformation — he has helped shape it.
Today, his research looks beyond accuracy alone. As society becomes increasingly dependent on positioning technologies, reliability has become just as important as precision. His research group is developing ways to combine satellite navigation with other sensing technologies so positioning systems continue working when signals are blocked by buildings, mountains or interference.
“It's no longer enough to make positioning more accurate,” he says. “We also have to make these systems more resilient.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Gao has also believed that research should extend well beyond the university. While publishing influential research remains an essential part of academic life, he has always viewed it as only one step in the innovation process.
“We don't want our research to stay in the laboratory,” he says. “We want to turn it into technologies that solve real-world problems.”
That philosophy has shaped much of his career. Alongside publishing groundbreaking research, Gao has co-founded technology companies, worked closely with industry partners, and helped translate scientific discoveries into practical products used around the world. Rather than viewing commercialization as separate from research, he sees it as an opportunity to learn from real-world challenges and inspire the next generation of scientific questions.
“Commercialization also inspires new research because you see first-hand what problems still need solving,” he says.
That same philosophy has influenced the way Gao approaches teaching and mentorship. Over nearly three decades at UCalgary, he has supervised more than 50 graduate students while mentoring postdoctoral fellows and visiting researchers from around the world. Many now lead research programs, teach at universities or develop new technologies in industry, extending the impact of his work far beyond his own laboratory.
Ask Gao what has brought him the greatest satisfaction throughout his career and he doesn't mention publications, patents or professional honours.
“The students are a central part of my career,” he says. “They bring new ideas and new perspectives, and they continue contributing long after they leave the university.”
It is a perspective that reflects the humility colleagues know well. Although his career has earned recognition from engineering organizations around the world — including election as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and fellowships in several international professional societies —Gao is quick to shift attention away from his own accomplishments and toward the people who have shared the journey.
That is one reason receiving the UCalgary Alumni's International Career Achievement Award carries particular significance. Unlike honours that recognize a specific research contribution or professional achievement, this award celebrates a lifetime of impact through discovery, innovation, entrepreneurship and mentorship.
Most of the awards he has received have come from professional organizations within his discipline. Being recognized by the institution where his own academic journey began feels different because it reflects the broader community that helped shape his career. Rather than viewing the award as an individual accomplishment, he sees it as recognition of the department, colleagues, collaborators and students who have worked alongside him over the past three decades.
That sentiment is echoed by nominator Hong (May) Han, who describes Gao's career as one that “reflects the very best of the University of Calgary's spirit — combining rigorous scholarship, global leadership and entrepreneurial innovation to advance technology and empower the next generation of geomatics professionals worldwide.”
For Gao, however, the focus remains firmly on the future. Navigation technologies continue to evolve as new satellite constellations, artificial intelligence and advanced sensing technologies create opportunities that would have been difficult to imagine when he first arrived in Calgary as a graduate student. Even after decades of research, he still approaches each new challenge with the same curiosity that first drew him to the field.
“I enjoy my work,” he says. “Curiosity continues to motivate me — and so do the students.”
