Back by popular demand! Join us for a showing of the film Inside Out, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A featuring UCalgary researchers and alumni specializing in children’s mental health.

Inside Out features young Riley who is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco. Her emotions — Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness — conflict on how best to navigate this life-changing event.

About the Speakers

Portrait of Dr. Susan Graham

Dr. Susan Graham (she/her)

Professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Calgary

Susan Graham, PhD, is the director of the Owerko Centre for Neurodevelopment and Child Mental Health, scientific director for the Azrieli Accelerator and a professor in UCalgary’s Department of Psychology. Dr. Graham is also a member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and a co-facilitator for One Child Every Child's "vulnerable to thriving" theme. Her research focuses on understanding emotional, language and cognitive development during infancy and preschool years. Alongside her research duties, Dr. Graham has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cognition and Development; is an elected fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and the Canadian Society Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science; and has been awarded for her dedication to and strength in effective mentorship.

Dr. Sheri Madigan (she/her)

Professor in the Department of Psychology, University of Calgary 

Dr. Sheri Madigan, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, professor and Canada Research Chair in UCalgary’s Department of Psychology, as well as the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Her research is focused on understanding how children’s early social experiences and relationships can influence their learning and mental health trajectories. Dr. Madigan’s research has yielded more than 200 publications and has been widely covered in the media, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time and CNN. She has earned multiple awards for her work, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2021.

Shelly Qualtieri (she/her)

Founder and owner, Shelly Qualtieri & Associates Counselling & Coaching 

Shelly Qualtieri, BA’99, is a registered social worker with a master's degree in investigations management. She is a consultant and trainer with the Centre for Suicide Prevention and facilitates training for the Crisis Trauma Resource Institute and the ACHIEVE Centre for Leadership & Workplace Performance. She has worked in the areas of mental health, justice, child and family services, homelessness, addictions, and domestic violence, and has taught at the university level. The mission of her practice is focused on providing individuals and organizations with bite-sized, practical strategies to develop and grow important coping mechanisms and to understand where behaviours and emotions can come from while increasing optimism, empowerment and growth.

About the Moderator

Kate Wong (she/her)

Registered nurse, Alberta Children’s Hospital 

Kate Wong, BN’12, is the incoming president and chair of the UCalgary Alumni Association Board of Directors. She has been a registered nurse at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for 11 years, specializing in pediatric hospice and palliative care. Kate is currently a PhD candidate studying children’s experiences of having a serious life-threatening or life-shortening illness. She has been a longstanding volunteer with the university and the Faculty of Nursing, where she served as president and co-president of the Nursing Alumni Committee from 2012 to 2019. Kate is also the recipient of three Faculty of Nursing Pursuit of Excellence Awards: the Undergraduate Student Award, the Exceptional Alumnus Award and the Inspirational Graduate Student Award.
