Giving Day 2024 across campus, part 3

Today’s the day! Be a part of UCalgary Giving Day by making a gift before midnight tonight

Donors drive extraordinary change here at UCalgary, supporting the students who will go on to shape our world, the research that will save and improve lives, and the entrepreneurial university where it all happens.

Be a part of it by making your Giving Day gift before midnight tonight. Whether you support research or student experiences — like some of the funds below — or another fund that’s meaningful to you, you’ll be making a real difference.

And speaking of research, take one last ride with Dan this Giving Day — specifically, in the SHRed Mobile, the Faculty of Kinesiology’s research lab on wheels:

Research

UCalgary is the Canada’s No. 1 startup creator and youngest top research university, each year turning more than half a billion dollars in research revenue into real-world impact.

The Cancer Prevention and Risk Reduction Fund aims to stop cancer in its tracks through early detection and risk deduction by finding new approaches for cancer screening, identifying high-risk groups and making screening more equitable within the population. If that weren’t reason enough to support, gifts to the fund will go even further this Giving Day, with additional gift matching generously provided by Erin and Glen Rumple.

Also with a focus on cancer, Faculty of Kinesiology’s Thrive Centre offers a free, safe and supported fitness facility for cancer survivors and support persons. Established by exercise oncologist Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed, PhD, and run by trained undergraduate and graduate students, the centre also remotely delivers its evidence-based exercise and wellness programming to cancer survivors.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s Wildlife Health Fund is investigating how wildlife impacts human health, with researchers studying the effects of climate change on wildlife, how diseases such as chronic wasting disease are moving closer and closer to human habitats, the impacts that invasive pigs or rodents have on the ecosystem, and more.

Student experience

You don’t have to be on campus to help students succeed — there are a number of Giving Day funds that help UCalgary offer an exceptional, robust student experience.

The Haskayne Student Experience Fund, for example, supports activities that complement traditional learning methods. Case competitions, field trips, and experiential teaching and learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom give students a chance to apply their learnings to real-world scenarios.

The Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) program involves multiple faculties, as a combined offering through the School of Public Policy, Haskayne School of Business, Schulich School of Engineering, Faculty of Law, and School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. The SEDV Scholarship supports students who are seeking a broad-based and comprehensive education in sustainable energy through the program.

Also representing multiple faculties are our Dinos sports teams, made up of students from across campus — including female student-athletes, a group that is typically underserved in varsity athletics. The Dinos Female Student-Athlete Award helps provide the finest educational experience for these students, while also boosting the visibility of women and girls in sport.

UCalgary Giving Day is April 18. Whether you support research, student awards or another one of UCalgary’s innovative funds, your gift will help change lives and shape the future. Eligible gifts made from April 4-18 will be matched, up to $2,500 per gift, per fund — but only while matching funds last, so be sure to give early! Make your gift today at ucalgary.ca/givingday.
