Maintaining your mental health during school
Five ways you can manage stress and set yourself up for success
Maintaining your mental health is very important as a busy student at the University of Calgary. See below for 5 ways you can benefit your mental health:
- Set realistic goals. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, relevant, and time-bound (aka. “SMART” goals). When your goals are well-defined, accomplishing them can be a huge motivator!
- Take a break. Online classes and Zoom sessions can be exhausting, both physically and mentally. Prevent “Zoom fatigue” by taking periodic breaks and remove yourself from electronics for short periods of time.
- Connect with family or friends outside of classes. Catch up with what has been happening with your family or call up a good friend and see how they’re doing. You can socialize safely outdoors, write a letter, play games online or even chat over FaceTime or Skype!
- Maintain good personal hygiene and care. Make sure you’re comfortable, clean and healthy to best engage in your academics and social activities. Staying active is a good way to relax and refresh yourself and take a break from your studies. Active Living has plenty of options for students — did you know that you get a $25 credit you can use with them for classes, programs or Outdoor Centre rentals?
- Reflect on what went well in your day. Self-reflection is key in identifying your strengths and weaknesses and developing strong and positive mental fortitude. Not sure where to start? Check out this short guide for self-reflection tips.
