Quick Chat: Reflections on a Career in Education

Retiring Werklund Prof shares his thoughts
Richard Heyman

In this quick chat, Retiring Werklund Prof, Richard Heyman, shares his thoughts.

Richard Heyman is packing up his office.

The professor in the Werklund School of Education isn’t moving into another space on campus as he has done many, many times before.  This time, when he closes his door for the final time, he’ll be embarking on the next chapter of his life: retirement.

But does an academic every really retire? Although he’ll be leaving his position at the University of Calgary, Heyman says he plans to continue to write and publish.

Heyman began his tenure at UCalgary in 1969, just a short time after the university became autonomous and the campus on the north hill opened.  It was his first job, and he liked it so much, he was here for his entire career.

As he prepares to make the transition to “retirement”—whatever that is, he sat down to reflect on his experiences during his career at the University of Calgary.
