Staying active over summer
We've heard recommendations from Alberta's Chief Medical Officer about staying close to home this summer and keeping physical distancing measures in place. Just because the pandemic has changed our plans doesn't mean it's cancelled the fun. Making the most of August will be simple with this list of fun events and experiences!
More than 10% of Calgary's footprint is parkland, with more than 1000 kilometres of pathways, according to the City of Calgary's website. Whether you're walking or biking, there's more than enough space to take advantage of the summer weather.
At Bowness Park, you can rent a canoe or a paddle boat for an hour from the boathouse (run by UCalgary's Outdoor Centre). During the Bowness Park redevelopment project, the City also added a new parking lot near Baker Park to provide access to the boat launch. Spend a day floating on the river, but don't forget your lifejacket!
WinSport and Canada Olympic Park (COP) is always a top Calgary destination, no matter the season. This summer, you can try out downhill karting or play some mini-golf for big fun. Make sure to buy tickets in advance.
If you're up for a day (or more) trip, check out some of the fantastic landscapes Alberta has to offer. Visit one of Alberta's national parks, explore the Canadian Badlands or check out the rugged beauty of northern Alberta. Find new trails, travel offers and more at Travel Alberta's website.
Take in the local arts scene
Calgary's dynamic arts and culture scene hasn't missed a beat since the start of the pandemic. Artists and performers, organizations and not-for-profits are pivoting to provide quality programming amid this unprecedented time.
Wagonstage Children's Theatre is presenting a special set of outdoor performances for children and their families this summer. The plays, written and performed by UCalgary's own Creative and Performing Arts students, will be sure to get the whole family laughing. Pre-registration is required.
Telus SPARK is always an exciting venture into science and technology, and this summer, they've partnered with B!G ART and opened their outdoor space as a drive-in theatre. Be sure to purchase your tickets in advance.
After closing for the last few months, the Glenbow Museum is now open to the public (as of Aug. 3). With tons of exhibits and lots of family-friendly content, you're sure to find something to interest everyone in your cohort.
As usual, Tourism Calgary has details on more events and hot spots to visit in Calgary this August.
Before embarking on your summer plans, make sure to check local guidelines and mandates related to the pandemic. If you're heading outdoors, remember to pack lots of water, sunscreen and bug spray!
