Two UCalgary faculty members named to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

On Sept. 8, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced the selection of two UCalgary faculty members to join the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The College is Canada’s national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership.

Dr. Sandy Hershcovis, PhD, and Dr. Catherine Lebel, PhD, will be inducted into the College at a ceremony in November 2020. The scholars were selected for this honour based on academic excellence and glowing nominations from their leaders and peers.

Hershcovis and Lebel are making remarkable advancements in the early stages of their careers, and UCalgary is honoured to support them in their continued pursuit of excellence.”

  • Dr. Sandy Hershcovis, PhD (Haskayne School of Business)

Dr. Sandy Hershcovis is an internationally recognized and award-winning scholar known for her study of workplace harassment. Her research advances our understanding of the social context of workplace harassment, focusing on the role of witnesses in the dynamics of harassment. Hershcovis has an impressive record of public engagement, serving on international expert panels and advising on public policies related to her work. Her research program on witness interventions aims to understand when and how witnesses can intervene to prevent harassment or mitigate its negative consequences.

  • Dr. Catherine Lebel, PHD (Associate Professor, Department of Radiology, Cumming School of Medicine; Adjunct Associate Professor, Werklund School of Education)

Dr. Catherine Lebel, PhD, has established an international reputation for outstanding research in pediatric neuroimaging. She uses advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to study brain maturation patterns in children, and how brain development is related to cognition, behavioural, and environmental factors. Dr. Lebel and her team have developed novel, creative techniques to successfully perform neuroimaging in young children, including a children’s book to detail the MRI scan process, and making the MRI scanner look like a rocketship. She is a leader in the understanding of brain development in children, and her insights have spurred further research around the world.

Dr. Lebel holds the Canada Research Chair in Paediatric Neuroimaging and is a member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) and the Owerko Centre at ACHRI.

Nominations for the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists close Dec. 1. The College is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. Nominations must be made by a current Fellow or a Member of the College.
