Times Higher Education World University Rankings
The University of Calgary has been ranked again as one of the world’s best universities, this time by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17. Released on Sept. 21, the ranking placed the university 195th in the world, making the significant jump into the top 200 for the first time.
This is the second time this year the university has been named as one of the top 200 universities in the world. Earlier in September, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings also placed the University of Calgary among the top 200.
“The latest Times World University Rankings provide another opportunity to benchmark our progress in delivering on our Eyes High goals that are focused on both national and global impacts,” notes President and Vice-Chancellor Elizabeth Cannon. “Based on performance indicators that align with our values for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international impacts, we have improved in nine of the 13 metrics. This valuable feedback comes at a critical point as we pull together to energize our Eyes High strategic vision.”
The University of Calgary is currently ranked as the top young university in Canada and North America according to the Times 150 Under 50 Rankings, released in April of this year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17 looked at the top 980 universities in the world, their biggest international ranking to date. The Times points out that they are the only global university performance evaluator to judge world-class universities across all of their core missions — teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
The top five Canadian universities include the University of Toronto at 22nd, the University of British Columbia at 36th, McGill University at 42nd, the University of Montreal at 103rd, and the University of Alberta at 107th.
The number one university in the world is the University of Oxford, followed by the California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
