University of Calgary remains in top 200 universities in the world

Center for World University Rankings releases its 2018 results
University of Calgary has consistently performed well in the CWUR ranking, placing in the top 200 in the world since 2014.

The University of Calgary has placed in the world's top 200 of the CWUR ranking since 2014.

The ranking of the world’s top 1,000 universities has been published this week by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). The University of Calgary ranked seventh in Canada (up from eighth place in 2017) and number 196 in the world.

As one of Canada’s top comprehensive research universities, the University of Calgary has consistently performed well in the CWUR ranking, placing in the top 200 in the world since 2014.

CWUR* uses seven objective and robust indicators to rank the world’s universities without relying on surveys and university data submissions. These include:

  • Quality of education, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university's size (15 per cent)
  • Alumni employment, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size (15 per cent)
  • Quality of faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals (15 per cent)
  • Research output, measured by the total number of research papers (15 per cent)  
  • Quality Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (15 per cent) 
  • Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly influential journals (15 per cent)
  • Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers (10 per cent) 

  *The methodology has been enhanced this year, with research now accounting for 70 per cent of the total score.
